Nicholas and Helena Thiry family portrait with 11 of their 12 children. Nick had 4 children with his first wife, but she died in Belgium. He emigrated in 1888 with his 4 children. He rented a farm near Mankato at first but in about 1896 moved north to homestead near Rock Creek, south of Pine City. Leo eventually took over the farm. I think this picture was taken in around 1922, perhaps for the wedding anniversary of Nick and Helena. Helena died in 1923 and her son, Felix is seated next to her and is wearing a wedding ring; he married in 1921. Back row-men are Leo, John, Nick and John Baptiste. Second row-women are Rose, Elizabeth, Catherine, Victoria and Marie. Front row is Theresa, Nicholas, Helena and Felix.
This is Leo out on his tractor doing the spring plowing at his farm. His son Gerry is seated on the tractor with him.
This is a family portrait of Leo and Lydia and their children. Taken in 1958 at a family reunion on the farm. Back Row- Robert, Leo, Harold, Richard, Gerry and Allen. Front Row – Bernice, Eleanor, Leo, Lydia and Alyce Jean.

Leo and Lydia standing by their car on the farm, probably 1940’s.
This is a rather odd picture of Michael Thiry and family. They seem to be in a celebratory mood, guns and musical instruments and the family dog in the hollowed out tree stump. Michael is on the right with the dark hat and vest on, his wife Pauline to the left holding a big mushroom. I can’t positively identify the others. Mike and his wife had 3 children, Elizabeth, Joseph, and Pauline; he girls married but Joseph did not. Elizabeth married Sheridan Greig, another well known Pine City native who was a state game warden. He spoke Sioux and was often called on to deal with communications with tribal members who were still in the Snake River area. The Greig’s had 14 children!
Wedding anniversary picture of Nick and Margaret Bever. They celebrated their 50th in February, 1921. As you can see the snow was flying! I believe the couple behind them are John Baptiste Tacheny and his wife Elizabeth, who was the Bevers oldest child. I imagine the flower girl was a granddaughter or maybe a great granddaughter. Father Leo is off to the left.

This the old farmhouse built by Nick Thiry when they moved to Pine City. I went inside it as a teenager with my uncle Leo. It was in bad shape and was eventually torn down. The trees that surrounded the house are still standing and can be seen from the highway.
A colorized version of a photo of the 3 daughters of Leo and Lydia. Left to right- Bernice, Alyce Jean and my mother, Eleanor. I think this was taken in the early 40’s as my mother left for Washington DC in 1941 or 1942. She joined the OSS and left for Ceylon in 1943 and later to China where she met my father, Basil Summers.
