The Pine County Rural School Museum is one of the few operating Rural Schools in Minnesota. Children in grades 1 - 8 are invited to travel back in time and experience life as it used to be during one of 3 sessions being offered this summer.
The children study reading, writing and arithmetic from original textbooks dating back to the 1890's. Each day's study generally follows a theme and occasionally speakers come to give an educational talk or demonstration. These topics vary from year to year, but have included Voyageurs, a Chippewa Chief, bee-keepers, wood-carvers, spinning and weaving demonstrations, and butter-making. The children will learn and play games and perform dances from the period, as well as completing many crafts and art projects. Children enjoy the one-room school's unique learning atmosphere and teaching methods. Students are encouraged to dress in “old-fashioned” clothing and to bring their lunch in a tin pail or basket. |
